Stone Age Economics (Routledge Classics)

Sahlins, Marshall/ Graeber, David (FRW)
紙版刊行: 2017/04
Routledge

Since its first publication over forty years ago this work has established itself as a classic of modern anthropology and arguably one of the founding works of anthropological economics. A radical study of tribal economies, domestic production for livelihood, and of the submission of domestic production to the material and political demands of society at large, Stone Age Economics regards the economy as a category of culture rather than behaviour, in a class with politics and religion rather than rationality or prudence. Sahlins concludes, controversially, that the experiences of those living in subsistence economies may actually have been better, healthier and more fulfilled than the millions enjoying the affluence and luxury afforded by the economics of modern industrialisation and agriculture.

Death in the Early Twenty-first Century : Authority, Innovation, and Mortuary Rites

Boret, S. P./ Long, S. O./ Kan, S.
紙版刊行: 2017/04
Palgrave Macmillan

Focusing on tradition, technology, and authority, this volume challenges classical understandings that mortuary rites are inherently conservative. The contributors examine innovative and enduring ideas and practices of death, which reflect and constitute changing patterns of social relationships, memorialisation, and the afterlife. This cross-cultural study examines the lived experiences of men and women from societies across the globe with diverse religious heritages and secular value systems. The book demonstrates that mortuary practices are not fixed forms, but rather dynamic processes negotiated by the dying, the bereaved, funeral experts, and public institutions.

商品詳細へコーヒー文化(第2版)
Coffee Culture : Local Experiences, Global Connections (Routledge Series for Creative Teaching and Learning in Anthropology) 2ND

Tucker, Catherine M.
紙版刊行: 2017/02
Routledge

Explores coffee as (1) a major commodity that shapes the lives of millions of people; (2) a product with a dramatic history; (3) a beverage with multiple meanings and uses (energizer, comfort food, addiction, flavouring, and confection); (4) an inspiration for humor and cultural critique; (5) a crop that can help protect biodiversity yet also threaten the environment; (6) a health risk and a health food; and (7) a focus of alternative trade efforts. This book presents coffee as a commodity that ties the world together, from the coffee producers and pickers who tend the plantations in tropical nations, to the middlemen and processors, to the consumers who drink coffee without ever having to think about how the drink reached their hands.

The Reinvention of Primitive Society : Transformations of a Myth (Routledge Classic Texts in Anthropology)

Kuper, Adam
紙版刊行: 2017/02
Taylor & Francis

Adam Kuper's iconoclastic intellectual history argues that the idea of "primitive society" is a western myth. The "primitive" is imagined as the opposite of the "civilised". But this is a protean myth. As ideas about civilisation change, so the image of primitive society must be adjusted. By way of fascinating account of classic texts in anthropology, ancient history and law, Kuper reveals how this myth underpinned academic research and inspired political programmes. Its ancestry is traced back to classical western beliefs about barbarians and savages, and Kuper also tackles the latest version of the myth, the idea of a global identity of "indigenous peoples".

Filial Obsessions : Chinese Patriliny and Its Discontents (Culture, Mind, and Society)

Sangren, P. S.
紙版刊行: 2017/02
Palgrave Macmillan

This book employs a broad analysis of Chinese patriliny to propose a distinctive theoretical conceptualization of the role of desire in culture. It utilizes a unique synthesis of Marxian and psychoanalytic insights in arguing that Chinese patriliny is best understood as, simultaneously, "a mode of production of desire" and as "instituted fantasy."The argument advances through discussions and analyses of kinship, family, gender, filial piety, ritual, and (especially) mythic narratives. In each of these domains, P. Steven Sangren addresses the complex sentiments and ambivalences associated with filial relations. Unlike most earlier studies which approach Chinese patriliny and filial piety as irreducible markers of cultural difference, Sangren argues that Chinese patriliny is better approached as a topic of critical inquiry in its own right.

商品詳細へ饗宴、飢餓、あるいは闘いか?:社会的複雑性への多元的経路
Feast, Famine or Fighting? : Multiple Pathways to Social Complexity (Studies in Human Ecology and Adaptation)

Chacon, R. (EDT)/ Mendoza, R. (EDT)
紙版刊行: 2017/01
Springer

The advent of social complexity has been a longstanding debate among social scientists. Recent approaches such as the inclusion of bioarchaeological perspectives, prospection methods, systematically-investigated archaeological sites along with emerging technologies are necessarily transforming our understanding of socio-cultural evolutionary processes. In short, many pre-existing ways of explaining the origins and development of social complexity are being reassessed. Contributors to this edited volume challenge the status quo regarding how and why social complexity arose by providing revolutionary new understandings of social inequality and socio-political evolution.
